E-Invoicing in South Africa

South Africa is gradually introducing electronic invoicing to digitalise tax reporting and reduce VAT fraud. South African Revenue Service (SARS) has been December 2021 Requirements for digital invoices for VAT-registered companies have been introduced. Invoices are issued via the SARS eFiling platform which serves as an official tax document. In the future, SARS plans to use a Peppol-based system, which enables real-time transmission of transaction data to the tax authorities. The mandatory introduction will be 2028 expected, which makes a gradual adaptation and digitalization of the billing processes necessary.
