E-Invoicing in Zambia

In Zambia, electronic invoicing has been 2024 with the system "Smart Invoice" introduced to increase tax transparency and combat tax evasion. Companies are required to issue their invoices electronically via the Zambian Revenue Authority (ZRA) provided platform. In addition, the electronic invoices must meet certain technical standards to ensure their authenticity and integrity. The implementation of the Smart Invoice system is an important step in Zambia's efforts to advance the digitization of the tax system. Companies are therefore encouraged to update their systems accordingly in order to meet the legal requirements.

The e-invoice primarily covers Business-to-Government (B2G) and Business to Business (B2B) transactions.

XML-Format.

Electronic signature

An electronic signature is not mandatory. However, there must be a clear Identification codes (Mark ID) and a QR code to be available.

Archiving

E-invoices must be at least 6 years long be archived.
