E-Invoicing in India

​India introduced a mandatory e-invoicing system for B2B transactions on 1 October 2020. A central component of this system is the Invoice Registration Portal (IRP), which is from the Goods and Services Tax Network (GSTN) Companies create their invoices in a standardized JSON format and submit them to the IRP for validation. After successful verification, an Invoice Reference Number (IRN) and a QR code is generated to confirm the authenticity of the invoice.

2020: Compulsory e-invoicing for companies with gradual introduction.

October 2020: Companies with a total annual turnover of over 500 Crore INR become mandatory.

January 2021: Companies with a turnover of over 100 Crore INR are obliged.

April 2021: Companies with an annual turnover of over 20 Crore INR are obliged.

April 2022: Companies with a turnover of more than 20 Crore INR are obliged.

April 2023: Companies with a turnover of more than 10 Crore INR are obliged.

August 2023: Companies with a turnover of more than 5 Crore INR are obliged.

The e-invoice primarily covers Business to Business (B2B) and Business-to-Government (B2G) transactions.
