E-Invoicing in Kenya

As part of its tax digitization strategy, Kenya has introduced the electronic invoicing system Electronic Tax Invoice Management System (eTIMS) introduced. Since January 1, 2024 is the use of eTIMS mandatory for all VAT-registered companies. The platform was developed by the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) Developed to increase tax transparency, improve VAT compliance, and replace manual processes. Through eTIMS, all invoice data is transmitted to the KRA in real time, ensuring a more efficient and accountable tax collection process. Its implementation represents an important step in Kenya's digital transformation of the tax system.

2018: Introduction of tax reform and first steps towards digitization of tax collection by the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA).

2019: Announcement of the implementation of e-invoicing systems by the KRA as part of the VAT reform.

2021: Mandatory start of real-time data exchange between ETRs and the KRA system (TIMS – Tax Invoice Management System). Companies must create e-invoices and submit them to the KRA in real time.

2022: Extending the use of TIMS to other companies.

2024: Obligation for all companies.
